Through generous donations, our program sends surgical teams from the United States to rural parts of Africa in order to provide urologic care to the men, women and children throughout the continent. Funds from GHA have also been used to provide travel and surgery for lifesaving surgeries for children in Ethiopia. To date, we have traveled to Zambia, Mozambique and Uganda and have helped many people.

Many of these trips have focused on the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula. A fistula is an abnormal communication which occurs between two body structures. A vesicovaginal fistula is a hole between the bladder and the vagina. When women are in labor, and the baby is stuck, the pressure from the fetal head can cause the bladder tissue to “slough” off, creating this hole. Women leak urine constantly and can be shunned from their communities. 

GHA, through the help of the director of our healthcare arm, Michael Ingber, MD, is dedicated to providing services for these women throughout Africa.
